Plácido Domingo at the Rudolfinum – An Evening of Opera Nobility and Spanish Passion

One of the greatest figures on the world opera stage, the legendary Spanish singer Plácido Domingo, is returning to the Czech Republic. On Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 7:30 PM, he will perform in the festive atmosphere of the Dvořák Hall at Prague’s Rudolfinum. This exceptional concert will offer not only a selection of the most beautiful opera arias but also passionate and heartfelt Spanish melodies.

Plácido Domingo, the recipient of dozens of prestigious awards and one of the famed Three Tenors, will bring a truly extraordinary experience to the Czech audience – performing in an acoustic hall. Thanks to the exceptional acoustics of the Rudolfinum, the audience will be able to fully appreciate the natural color and power of his voice. He will be accompanied on stage by Slovak soprano Adriana Kučerová, Czech mezzo-soprano Ester Pavlů, and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (SOČR) under the baton of renowned Slovak conductor Rastislav Štúr.

The evening’s program includes operatic gems by Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Camille Saint-Saëns, and other great composers. Among the highlights will be arias such as O mio babbino caro, Pietà, rispetto, amore, and a duet from Verdi’s La Traviata. The second half of the evening will feature the vibrant and energetic rhythms of Spanish zarzuela, including works by composers such as Gerónimo Giménez, Federico Moreno Torroba, and Léo Delibes.

This concert will be not only a musical event of the season but also a unique opportunity to experience the artistry of a legendary vocalist in a setting that offers both beauty and deep artistic impact.

An internationally celebrated and versatile artist, Plácido Domingo is regarded as one of the finest opera singers of all time. He is also an accomplished conductor and currently serves as the honorary artistic director of the Arena di Verona Opera Festival, as well as general director of both the Los Angeles and Washington National Operas.

His repertoire includes a record-breaking 151 roles and more than 4,050 performances. He made his debut at the Arena di Verona in 1969 in Turandot, and a few months later opened the season at Teatro alla Scala in Milan with Ernani. Over his career, he has made more than 100 recordings, received 12 Grammy Awards, and appeared in over 50 opera films and videos. He starred in three major opera films: Carmen (dir. F. Rosi), La traviata, and Otello (both directed by F. Zeffirelli). Over one billion people watched him as Cavaradossi in Tosca, broadcast live from the actual Roman locations of the opera.

From 1990, for more than a decade, he performed alongside José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti as one of The Three Tenors, helping to bring opera to a new global audience. In 1993, he founded and has since presided over the prestigious Operalia singing competition. He has premiered several new operas, including Goya by Menotti and Il Postino by Catán.

Domingo is also an accomplished conductor, having led over 500 opera and symphonic performances with the world’s top orchestras. He recently made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival conducting Wagner’s Die Walküre.

In recent years, he has increasingly focused on key baritone roles, especially those by Verdi, such as Simon Boccanegra, I due Foscari, La traviata, Nabucco, Il trovatore, Giovanna d’Arco, Macbeth, Ernani, Don Carlo, Luisa Miller, Thaïs, and Gianni Schicchi. In 2017, he returned to the tenor repertoire in the title role of Tamerlano at Teatro alla Scala.

Following his lifetime achievement award from the Österreichischer Musiktheaterpreis in Salzburg (2020), he gave acclaimed gala performances at the Reggia di Caserta and the Arena di Verona, both as singer and conductor. His recent successes include Simon Boccanegra at the Vienna State Opera, Nabucco at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and receiving the CC Forum Award for philanthropic work in Monte Carlo. He also conducted Manon Lescaut and sang at a gala at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre. In December 2020, he performed I due Foscari in Monte Carlo, appeared on the opening night of the 2020/2021 season at Teatro alla Scala, and sang Nabucco at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg under Valery Gergiev.

Adriana Kučerová

Adriana Kučerová

Adriana Kučerová follows in the tradition of distinguished Slovak sopranos such as Lucia Popp and Edita Gruberová. A graduate of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and the National Conservatory in Lyon, she won First Prize and overall victory at the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna (2005).

She has appeared at major opera houses including La Scala (Milan), the Bavarian State Opera, the Berlin and Vienna State Operas, and Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. She has performed at renowned festivals and worked with world-class conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Gustavo Dudamel, and Riccardo Muti. Her repertoire includes lead roles in The Cunning Little Vixen, L’elisir d’amore, and The Barber of Seville. Her concert career has taken her to cities such as St. Petersburg, London, Rome, and Tokyo.

Ester Pavlů

Ester Pavlů is one of the most promising younger generation mezzo-sopranos. In the current season, she will appear in Fribourg, Switzerland, as the Foreign Princess (Rusalka), in Vilnius as Carmen, and at the National Theatre in Prague as Carmen, the Foreign Princess and in March 2026 as Kundry in a new production of Parsifal. Her notable operatic achievements in recent seasons include the roles of Vlasta (Šárka), Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana), and Fenena (Nabucco) at the National Theatre in Prague, the Ice Queen (Švanda the Bagpiper) at Theater an der Wien and in Graz, Eboli (Don Carlo), Carmen, and Amneris (Aida) in Riga, Angelina (La Cenerentola) in Sofia, the Foreign Princess in Bratislava, as well as Santuzza in Basel. Ester Pavlů collaborates with leading symphony orchestras and conductors such as †Jiří Bělohlávek, Pietari Inkinen, Petr Popelka, Frédéric Chaslin, José Cura, Juraj Valčuha, among others. Her discography includes Dvořák’s Songs with English pianist Charles Spencer and the opera Oracle by David Buckley with the BBC Concert Orchestra in London.

Rastislav Štúr

Rastislav Štúr

Rastislav Štúr has been named the Director of Opera at the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava in September 2024. He previously held this position from 2018 to 2021, and served as the Opera SND’s Chief Conductor from 2008 to 2020.He made his debut on this stage in 1996 (Boito: Mefistofele) and has since conducted a number of successful opera performances here. He regularly cooperates with the National Theatre Brno. He was a guest conductor in Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg (The Bartered Bride), opera houses in Graz (L’elisir d’amore), Giessen (Il barbiere di Siviglia), and Essen (Così fan tutte). In 2016 he conducted Dvořák’s Rusalka in in Beijing, as the first ever performance of a Czech opera in China. On concert stages, he was a partner to many renowned opera stars (Peter Dvorský, Montserrat Caballé, Edita Gruberová, Gabriela Beňačková, Elena Obraztsova, Ilona Tokody, Eva Urbanová, Pavol Breslik, Lawrence Brownlee), and he collaborated on solo CDs of Peter Dvorský and Jolana Fogašová. In the most recent years, he’s been cooperating mainly with Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra and Prague Symphony Orchestra, including several international tours. Rastislav Štúr graduated from Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno.

Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra

The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (SOČR) ranks among the foremost Czech orchestras today. Since the 2022/2023 season, Czech conductor Petr Popelka has served as chief conductor and artistic director, with Robert Jindra as principal guest conductor.

The orchestra has collaborated with top Czech and international conductors such as Tomáš Netopil, Petr Altrichter, Jakub Hrůša, Cornelius Meister, Alexander Liebreich, Ilan Volkov, Stephan Asbury, Ion Marin, Michał Nesterowicz, Anu Tali, and Wayne Marshall. Among the many renowned soloists to perform with SOČR are pianist Krystian Zimerman, violinists Leila Josefowicz and Pierre Amoyal, cellists Gautier Capuçon, István Várdai, and Steven Isserlis, trombonist Christian Lindberg, and jazz musician Avishai Cohen. Vocalists have included Renée Fleming, Elīna Garanča, Asmik Grigorian, José Cura, Juan Diego Flórez, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Jonas Kaufmann.
